This event is one of my absolute favorites in Boise! If you’ve never seen the sky filled with dozens of colorful hot air balloons, the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic is the event that will change that. And if you’re visiting Boise over Labor Day weekend, or you’re just looking for a fun time for the whole family, the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic is an absolute must.
Whether you’re bringing kids, planning a unique date morning, or simply looking for one of the most photogenic experiences in Boise, this event is worth setting your alarm for.
And the best part? It’s completely free to attend.

What is the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic?
The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic is an annual hot air balloon festival held every Labor Day weekend at Ann Morrison Park.
From Wednesday – Sunday, balloon pilots from around the region gather before sunrise to inflate and launch their balloons from the park, creating one of the most iconic sights in Boise. The festival has become a local tradition and draws thousands of visitors every year.
In addition to the morning launches, you’ll often find:
- Dozens of colorful hot air balloons
- Live announcements and pilot introductions
- Food vendors and coffee stands
- Family-friendly activities
- Balloon Glow (select evenings)
- Merchandise vendors
- Plenty of room to spread out with blankets or lawn chairs
One thing to keep in mind is that balloon launches are weather-dependent. If winds are too strong or weather conditions aren’t safe, launches may be delayed or canceled.

Things to Know Before You Go
Location: Ann Morrison Park, 1000 S Americana Blvd., Boise, Idaho
Admission: Free! One of the reasons I love this event is that you don’t need tickets to enjoy it.
Schedule: The Spirit of Boise usually happens over Labor Day Weekend and each day is themed. It’s Wednesday – Sunday. For example: they usually have a Kid’s Day, Media Day, VIP Day & Nite Glow Spectacular.
Parking: Parking is available around Ann Morrison Park but fills up quickly. If you’re staying downtown, I actually recommend walking, biking the Greenbelt, or taking an Uber to avoid traffic after the launches. Check out parking details here.
When to Arrive: Personally, I think watching the balloons inflate is almost as fun as watching them launch. Every day, they launch at different times, and you don’t need to get there too much earlier than the launch to still see them get filled up. Check out the schedules to see what time to show up. It’s sooo fun seeing dozens of balloons slowly come to life while the sky starts changing colors is an experience all on its own.
What to Bring: Since you’ll be outside early in the morning, I recommend bringing:
- Blanket or lawn chairs
- Coffee (trust me!)
- Waterproof shoes (the ground is always wet in the morning) so little rain boots or tennis shoes would be great!
- Light jacket or sweatshirt (it’s colder in the AM)
- Camera
- Water bottle
Official Website: Be sure to check their website to see all of the most recent times and events!

Is the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic family-friendly?
Absolutely! This is one of my favorite Boise events for families because there’s plenty of space for kids to run around while everyone watches the balloons launch.
Children especially love seeing the balloons inflate up close, and afterward you can spend time exploring Ann Morrison Park or walking along the Boise River Greenbelt.
Local Tip
If you’re making a morning of it, grab breakfast afterward downtown or on the Boise Bench. One of my favorite combinations is:
- Grab coffee at Dawson Taylor in the Lusk District or coffee at Push & Pour on the Bench
- Breakfast Burritos at Lost Window, right next door
- Take a walk along the Boise Greenbelt or explore Kathryn Albertson Park after the balloons go up
- Wander Freak Alley Gallery
- Visit the Boise Farmers Market (seasonal)
It makes for one of my favorite Boise mornings every year.
