Best Family-Friendly Resort in Tucson, Arizona

As someone who usually likes to pack in a lot of things while traveling, I didn’t expect one of my favorite parts of our Tucson, Arizona trip to be barely leaving the hotel.

But after checking into the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa in Tucson, we quickly realized this was the kind of resort that made slowing down feel really great!

Between the lazy river, on-site restaurants, guided hikes through the saguaros, nightly tequila toast, spa, and beautiful desert views from our balcony room, it ended up being one of the most relaxing trips I’ve taken in a long time.

This was a girls’ trip I took with my friend and toddler in April, and below I’m sharing our full experience!

Why We Chose JW Marriott Starr Pass

When planning our Tucson trip, I knew I wanted somewhere that felt relaxing but still gave us access to outdoor adventure and the desert scenery Arizona is known for.

As someone who has traveled extensively both solo and now as a mom, I’ve realized family travel changes what makes a hotel truly “worth it.” In this case I wanted convenience, walkability, easy dining options, built-in activities, and a pool

And that’s what made JW Marriott Starr Pass stand out to me. The resort gave us the ability to experience Tucson without constantly packing up the car, driving across town, or packing too much into a 4-day itinerary.

What Makes JW Marriott Starr Pass Special

The JW Marriott Starr Pass is tucked into the Sonoran Desert just outside downtown Tucson, surrounded by saguaros and mountain views and right next to the Tucson Mountain Park area.  The property feels secluded and peaceful while still being close enough to explore Tucson if you want to.

One thing I loved immediately was how much there was to do without needing to constantly get in the car.

The resort offers:

  • A lazy river and multiple pools
  • On-site restaurants and bars
  • Guided morning hikes
  • A full spa
  • Golf course access
  • Native American morning rituals
  • A nightly tequila toast
  • Balcony rooms with mountain or desert views
  • A free shuttle to dowtown Tucson

The property also has direct access to hiking trails through Tucson Mountain Park.

The Guided Hike Through the Saguaros

One of the highlights of our stay ended up being the resort’s guided morning hike. I almost didn’t go because my friend was working and I would have to do it alone with my toddler. I felt nervous about doing a two-hour desert hike “alone” with her in the carrier and I worried she’d cry, hate it, or that we’d slow the group down. But it ended up being one of the biggest confidence-boosting moments I’ve had as a mom and boy was it gorgeous!!

The hike took us through the saguaros with beautiful desert views and around 500 feet of elevation gain. I had never seen a saguaro cactus that close up, and it was SO COOL! Everyone in the group was incredibly kind, some even offered to take our picture, and my daughter loved pointing at all the cacti along the trail. I highly recommend doing the guided hike if you have time.

The Pools, Lazy River & Family-Friendly Amenities

One thing I now pay attention to when reviewing family-friendly hotels is whether the property makes travel easier for parents or if it just markets itself as “family friendly.” I really did feel like this resort was designed in a way that helped families relax.

Because there were multiple pools, a lazy river, restaurants, hiking trails, and activities all in one place, it made a huge difference traveling with a toddler. It also helped that the resort felt spacious and calm. We were here in April, so it might get busier in other months, but we felt like we had so much space!

The pool area includes multiple pools, a lazy river, and a waterslide, which made it easy to spend most of the afternoon without needing much else on the itinerary. We got a cabana each day we were there, and it was the best idea because it had a TV, water, a delivery of fruit, chips, and salsa included, as well as large couches and shade, so the toddler could nap and we could just post up there ordering food and drinks all day.

Our Room at JW Marriott Starr Pass

We stayed in a balcony room overlooking the desert landscape, golf course, and pool, and the views were gorgeous!

One of my favorite parts of staying here was waking up to the saguaros and mountain views right outside our room. The rooms also worked well for traveling with a toddler because there was enough space to spread out and reset between activities. They also had a Packnplay waiting for us upon arrival.

Our rooms had also just recently been remodeled 3 months ago, so we got the brand new design and it really was a beautiful room and bathroom!

Parent hack: Book a room with a balcony if you have a napping child or baby that goes to bed early! That way you can hang out on the balcony after they go to sleep and you won’t wake them!

Dining at JW Marriott Starr Pass

Another reason this resort worked so well for us was having multiple restaurants right on property! The dining options ranged from casual poolside dining to more elevated dinners. We especially loved the food from Signature Grill and the brunch in the morning from Passagio! One of my favorite moments each evening was also the nightly tequila toast overlooking the desert at sunset at the Salud terrace bar.

The Spa & Relaxing Atmosphere

The Hashani Spa was awesome and pretty big! They offer treatments and wellness experiences inspired by the Sonoran Desert. I got a wonderful massage and then got to spend time at the spa-only pool, hot tub, steam room, and lounge rooms with a ‘make your own tea blend’ station.

While traveling with a child, I love a spa option because it’s a great way to trade off with each caretaker while letting the other relax for a few hours!

Is JW Marriott Starr Pass Worth It?

If you’re looking for a Tucson resort that combines outdoor adventure with an easy, relaxing atmosphere, I absolutely think JW Marriott Starr Pass is worth considering.

It works especially well for:

  • Couples looking for a relaxing Arizona getaway

And as someone who usually feels pressure to constantly “do more” while traveling, this trip reminded me that sometimes the best travel days happen when you slow down a little.
