What to Expect on the 4th of July in Tahoe

What to Expect on the 4th of July in Tahoe

1. Lake Tahoe busy on the 4th of July

The answer to this is a resounding YES! The Fourth of July holiday weekend is the busiest time of the year in the Lake Tahoe area. When planning a visit during this time of year, know that there will be excess traffic and crowded conditions on the beaches, in the towns, and while watching fireworks displays on the lake.  If you’re going to the beach, head out early to stake out a spot. And if you’re driving in from San Francisco or another city, get prepped for heavy traffic and long driving times.

Is it still worth it? I think so! It’s a great experience, even if you do it one time!

2. Be prepared for a lot of fun beach parties

The best beach parties happen in Tahoe on the 4th. Some are more popular than others, but the biggest rager beaches are beaches like Zephyr Cove, Kings Beach, and Chambers Landing Beach. We opted for a middle-of-the-road beach since we weren’t into raging our faces off this year.

This hike ended up at Meek’s Bay (really close to Chambers), and it ended up being an interesting mix of families, college kids, and underage partiers. Let’s just say it was interesting people watching… Good thing the beach was beautiful so we got a good mix of relaxation and partying.beach partiesWhat to Expect on the 4th of July in Tahoe

3. There are fireworks shows and light shows all over the water

The fun thing about Lake Tahoe is they take their fireworks and light shows very seriously. You can see fireworks shows and/or light shows from just about anywhere on the lake it seems! They do different shows depending on which side of the lake you’re staying on. We stayed in Tahoe City (North Lake) and could see them perfectly across the water.

Lights on the Lake Fireworks display

In South Lake Tahoe, over the fourth of July, they do a Lights on the Lake Fireworks display!  This is one of the coolest light shows in the area, and one of the largest fireworks displays west of the Mississippi!

You’ll want to stake out a place at the beach by late afternoon or morning. Some great spots to watch the fireworks show are Lakeview Commons/El Dorado Beach, Nevada Beach, Edgewood-Tahoe, Timber Cove Marina, The Tallic Historic Site, Bijou Community Park, Reagan Beach and El Dorado Beach.  Be sure to plan for this, as traffic can get congested.

Donner Lake Fireworks

About 30 minutes from Lake Tahoe is Donner Lake. Here, you can participate in classic 4th of July celebrations like fireworks, games, music, and BBQs that take place at West End Beach.

4. There are drone shows

Drone shows are peppering the Tahoe area over the 4th of July due to wildlife and environmental concerns about traditional fireworks displays. They are just as spectacular, and here are some popular options!

Incline Village Crystal Bay Sky Drone Show

In North Lake Tahoe, the Incline Village Ridgeline Ball Fiels is the Incline Village Crystal Bay Sky Drone Show, a free drone light show with a beer garden, DJ, laser show, and a main event drone sky show. This is a fun, family-friendly event and a little twist from a traditional fireworks show! You’ll want to bring blankets, beach chairs, and a picnic to view the show!

Tahoe City Drone Show

Another drone show happens every year in Tahoe City. It features over 300 drones above the water, and you can see them from the shores of the lake or a boat on the lake.

Commons Beach Drone Show

For live music and family-friendly activities throughout the day, including a Drone Show at night, check out Commons Beach!

5. You can participate in fun lake activities

There are so many lake activities to do in Tahoe. We rented a boat for the day and had the best time. And there are many places on the lake to rent stand-up paddle boards, jet skis, boats, and even rides to go parasailing. I recommend booking early if you can! We ended up SUPing on the 4th and got 5 paddle boards easily in Tahoe City right on the spot and we also rented a boat on the 5th, and it was discounted.

6. You can go hiking and enjoy the views

Lake Tahoe is GORGEOUS! Literally, everywhere you look, you’ll see stunning views. We hiked to the Stateline Fire Lookout on the Nevada border and got some great snaps of North Lake Tahoe. The water is also the bluest blue, and when I swam in it, I could see the bottom so clearly I felt like I was in Cancun. Check out this awesome blog post about the best hikes in Lake Tahoe.

7. The water levels might be low

Some years, due to a lack of snow run-off, the water can be extremely low. This, in turn, causes some beaches to go away and the tide to be far out from shore. When we went, some of the docks had to be rebuilt to reach the water. It’s actually quite sad, and a sign of some wild global warming, but all of the main beaches are still intact and ready for you!

8. July 5th clears out

We went boating early morning on July 5th and wished we had stayed in Tahoe the entire day. Stay up there if you can because the crowds will have all cleared out, depending on what day the 4th of July falls and the lake is like glass because no one’s on it. It’s a perfect day to stay and relax if you can swing it.

9. There’s a beach cleanup every year on July 5

If you want to do your part in cleaning up Lake Tahoe after people leave for the 4th of July, there is an annual “Keep Tahoe Red, White, and Blue Beach Cleanup! After the 4th of July, sadly, the beaches get covered in trash! One year, there was 8,500 pounds of trash left at Lake Tahoe after the 4th of July. That’s just sad!!

This volunteer program is the largest cleanup of the year to remove litter from Lake Tahoe’s Shores. You can help with this cleanup on size beaches around the lake, including Kiva Beach, Kings Beach, Nevada Beach, Lakeview Commons, Commons Beach, and Zephyr Cove. You can sign up here, or they also take walk-ins!

10. You can go skiing!

At the Palisades Tahoe Freedom Fest, you can go summer skiing and riding at Alpine! This only happens when there is enough snow, so check their website before planning on this. If you do get the chance to go, you’ll get to see live music at this awesome festival! They will have celebrations going on all day and night.

11. Be sure to celebrate the 4th of July in Tahoe responsibly

As a visitor to this beautiful place,  please do your part to be a responsible visitor and consider the impacts of what high tourism can do to places like this. A few ways to help are to:

  • Limit the traffic on the roads – do your part to walk, bike, use public transport, and carpool. There is a free shuttle called TART you can use as well.
  • Pack out your waste and trash – this is a huge problem that can be helped by you!
  • Be fire-safe! Also note that Fireworks are completely prohibited in the Tahoe Basin.
  • Please be kind and have patience so everyone can enjoy their 4th of July together!

Is July a good month to visit Lake Tahoe?

Yes! The weather in July in Tahoe is perfect for doing anything outdoors, like water sports, hiking, biking, etc. The temps stay around 80 degrees. It’s also perfect for swimming weather and great for boating days or enjoying some stand-up paddleboard activities. This is a great way to get out of the California or Nevada heat and be near cool waters!

How to get to Lake Tahoe?

There are many ways to get to Lake Tahoe. One of the most popular ways is to fly into Reno-Tahoe International Airport and drive 45 minutes to Tahoe. If you’re driving, it’s also easy to get to North Lake Tahoe from Sacramento and Sacramento International Airport (2 2-hour drive) or from San Francisco or Bay Area airports (SFO, OAK, SJC), which are about a 3.5-hour drive.
